BAIC BJEV EX5

2026-10-04 09:10:00

The BAIC BJEV EX5 is a compact all-electric SUV launched by BAIC BJEV in early 2019. Serving as a crucial product during the initial phase of the marque’s "upmarket move" strategy, it was once seen as BAIC BJEV’s spearhead to penetrate the mid-to-high-end segment in the all-electric SUV market. Backed by the "Darwin System" alongside fairly practical equipment, the EX5 initially drew notable attention. However, amid the rapid evolution of China's new energy vehicle market and subsequent strategic shifts, the model has largely bowed out of the market, serving as a representative transitional offering for the brand.

Model Overview

The BAIC BJEV EX5 is positioned as a C-segment all-electric SUV, measuring approximately 4,480 mm in length, 1,837 mm in width, and 1,673 mm in height, with a 2,665 mm wheelbase. Its core highlights include being one of the "pioneering models with the Darwin System" and a "pragmatic all-electric SUV". Key selling points of this model include:

Powered by the Darwin System: As one of the first models to feature BAIC BJEV’s "Darwin System", it integrated vehicle electronic management, intelligent connectivity, and AI interaction to deliver active perception and vehicle optimisation capabilities.

EMD 3.0 Intelligent Electronic Control: Equipped with the then-advanced, highly integrated EMD 3.0 intelligent electronic control system, it provided real-time monitoring and optimisation across the battery, electric motor, and electronic control modules to enhance overall energy efficiency.

Outdoor Power Supply Capability: Featuring early adoption of V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) reverse charging capabilities, the SUV could function as a mobile power source, catering to outdoor power needs such as camping.

Development History

Launch Phase (2019): In January 2019, the BAIC BJEV EX5 officially hit the market, priced between RM169,900 and RM199,900 (post-subsidy). Competing against contemporary mainstream family electric SUVs with similar badges or segments (such as the WM Motor EX5 and Roewe ERX5), it carried the brand's ambitions to move upmarket.

Market Rollout (2019–2021): Thanks to its understated SUV profile and an NEDC-rated range of 415 km, the EX5 gained traction among selected family buyers as well as e-hailing fleet operators.

Discontinuation and Strategic Pivot (2022 to Present): As BAIC Group redirected its core focus towards the premium "Arcfox" marque and next-generation smart EV platforms, the EX5's architecture and technology quickly aged. The model was officially discontinued in recent years, with only a small number of units remaining in the secondary market.

Market Performance

Target Market: It was initially targeted at family buyers seeking practical interior space coupled with decent smart connectivity features.

Market Standing: The EX5 marked BAIC BJEV’s tentative step from entry-level urban electric runabouts into the C-segment smart SUV space. While it carried certain tech highlights during its launch, it struggled to maintain competitive ground against newer EV startups that rapidly surged ahead in computing power, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and DC fast-charging capabilities.

Current Status: As of 2026, the EX5 has completely faded from mainstream contention. It mainly trades in the used car market with relatively low resale values. Due to its legacy electrical and electronic architecture, it cannot support modern ADAS and connected experiences via over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Core Specifications

Powertrain: Powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 160 kW and 300 Nm of peak torque, offering respectable 0-100 km/h acceleration figures for its era.

Battery and Range: Fitted with a 61.8 kWh lithium battery pack providing an NEDC range of up to 415 km. It also featured a battery thermal pre-heating system to mitigate range loss during cold weather conditions.

Infotainment: Equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display powered by Baidu DuerOS voice controls, showcasing BAIC BJEV's highest standard in cabin tech at the time.

Future Plans

As of 2026, all R&D, production, and software support for the BAIC BJEV EX5 have officially ceased. BAIC BJEV has rechannelled its R&D resources entirely into Arcfox’s integrated cockpit-and-driving architecture and global export platforms, making the EX5’s underlying technology part of the brand’s past chapter. For the remaining owners on the road, aftersales support continues strictly through regular spare parts supply, with no further updates planned for the nameplate.
